Overview

SEA offers a comprehensive Youth Arabic language program that allows the student to gradually progress from a beginner level to more advanced levels of reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking, while gaining an appreciation into the richness of Arabic history and cultures.

Classical (Fus-ha) Arabic is taught for all levels, allowing the student to build a solid foundation in the language. The student will be able to understand Arabic books, newspapers, and news broadcasts through the building of vocabulary and knowledge of grammar rules. In later levels, Sultan Education Academy will expose the student to the usage of popular Arabic slang for the purpose of showing the differences between the formal and informal Arabic, and enabling use at the street-level.

Youth Arabic programs are offered in small class settings (eight students maximum) or through private, one-on-one instruction. All classes are taught at Sultan Education Academy located at #201, 1440 -17th Ave SW, Calgary, Alberta. Youth Arabic programs are intended for students who are 5 to 15 years old. Everyone is welcome, and a variety of cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, and reasons for learning Arabic make up the students who study at SEA.

The commitment for Levels I, II, and III are two, 60-minute classes each week, for a six-month period. Class times are flexible and can be set according to the needs of the students. The minimum number of students needed for any level is six. The maximum class size is eight students. If the minimum is not met, students are put on a waiting list and notified when a full session will start.

One-on-one instruction is arranged according to the needs of the student and is flexible with respect to dates and times.

Youth Level I (Beginner)

Students with little or absolutely no previous knowledge of the Arabic language are encouraged to register in Level I. Classes will introduce the basic structure of the language, the Arabic alphabet, pronunciation of each letter, and different aspects of grammar, allowing the student to gain confidence in spoken and written Arabic. Participants will develop comprehension, understanding of simple questions and answers, and a functional vocabulary. Students will be able to compose simple sentences, interact in a dialogue, and gain fluency and confidence in speaking and reading. Upon completion of this course, each student will have the ability to compose sentences in the past, present, and future tenses. In Level I, the instructor speaks mainly English for the majority of the class time. There is a written and oral exam at the end of the semester and the student is awarded a certificate upon successfully passing the exam.

Course material is provided and is an additional $40.

Relevant, educational plays will be used in class to allow students to incorporate what they’ve learned. In Level II, the instructor speaks mainly Arabic for the majority of the class. Students are expected to have a high reading and comprehension speed, close to the speed of someone who has spoken Arabic as their first language. Relevant, educational plays will be used in class to allow students to incorporate what they’ve learned. In Level III, the instructor speaks Arabic for the entire class.
